This intensive Masterclass is geared to the requirements of jewellers, designer makers, applied artists and creative people who want to expand their business by taking advantage of 3D digital designing and 3D printing opportunities but find standard Computer Aided Design (CAD) programmes very intimidating.
It is a 2 day intensive Masterclass for applied artists and creative people, focussing on what digital technologies can offer.
It is is geared to the requirements of designer makers, applied artists and creative people who want to expand their business by taking advantage of 3D digital designing and 3D printing opportunities but find standard Computer Aided Design (CAD) programmes very intimidating.
The Masterclass will use the ‘Anarkik 3D Design’ package designed and developed specifically for designer makers and applied artists who need a straightforward 3D modelling system that is easy and enjoyable to use, combining the hand-crafted with digital technologies.
It is an intensive course with hands-on learning and creating guided by demonstrations of digital functionality and handling 3D printed items. Practical information on how and where to access the technology will be provided along with individual attention for progressing on to the next stage.
ABOUT ANN MARIE SHILLITO
Led by designer/maker/jeweller Ann Marie Shillito: author of the book ‘Digital Crafts – Industrial Technologies for Applied Artists & Designer Makers’. Ann Marie is CEO of Anarkik3D, which develops 3D modelling software used in the Masterclass. She has expertise in both the software and 3D printing.
Entry Level: Suitable for jewellery, art & design students, graduates and professionals.
Languages: Taught in English.
Participants: Maximum 10 People.
Materials: Computers and software will be provided for student use on both days.
Masterclass attendees are eligible for a 15% discount on Cloud9 software (the Falcon haptic device needs to be purchased separately).
There is also a Loan Scheme available.

PROGRAMME
DAY 1: 10am to 4:00pm
1 hour for lunch – provided.
4:30pm onwards – 1 hour lecture and dinner with drinks
Intro: brief overview followed by swift run through in demo mode to show the interface and main menu features including the advantages of using a ‘3D mouse’ and haptics.
Hands on session: Cloud9
~ Navigation: getting the feel for interacting/creating in a risk free 3D virtual environment.
~ Working with prepared tutorials to try out all the functions through structured playing and exploring, with individual assistance.
Lunch (and the opportunity to discuss the morning’s progress with the group)
Hands on session: continue working through tutorials at own pace
Also on day 1: introduction to designing for 3D printing: handling objects, about materials and constraints.
End day 1: brief overview of day 2 programme: designing for 3D printing
4-4:30pm: Break with refreshments provided
4:30-5:30: Lecture by Ann Marie Shillito with a short talk about 3D printing by Digits2Widgets
5:30: Dinner with drinks
DAY 2: 10 am to 4:00pm
1 hour for lunch – provided.
Intro: 10 am (coffee/tea) informal discussion about focus for day 2
Hands on session: continue working through tutorials and/or working on your own ideas
Session 2: designing for 3D printing
~ The principles of creating robust models
~ saving files in the right format and scale
~ different design software programmes
Lunch (and the opportunity to discuss the progress so far with the group)
Hands on session: work on a model with 3D printing in mind.
Session 3: information and handling 3D printed models
~ Materials: plastics, resin, glass, ceramics, metals etc
~ Different 3D printing systems: impact on designing
~ Where and how to access 3D print services
~ Likely issues and associated costs
Outcome:
Practical experience 3D designing fluidly and organically, information about 3D printing, how to design for it and how and where to access it to feel confident to move forward to your next stage –
Designing models ready for 3D printing.
