In this Masterclass, Daniela will lead you through an array of innovative pin solutions which form an integral part of the overall brooch design.
It is a 5 day intensive Masterclass led by Daniela Malev for jewellers & students with a good command of bench skills. It will focus on looking at what constitutes a quality brooch back design along with designing an innovative solution for the pin which connects the piece securely to the body.
An important feature of this Masterclass will be devising solutions for pins which move beyond being a functional and invisible device on the backside, to becoming an essential part of the brooch in terms of content and aesthetics.
This intensive masterclass caters for jewellers and students who want to expand their repertoire and knowledge of innovative brooch backs to incorporate pin design solutions which form an integral part of the overall brooch design.
It will initiate and encourage a conscious approach to the design of the brooch back and its mechanisms. You will be introduced to a variety of brooch back mechanisms and learn how to realize them technically. Daniela will guide you through various exercises on different needle techniques and ways of thinking about what a needle can be and how it can be solved. You will develop a fundamental understanding that the brooch back mechanism should be thought of, and integrated, during the whole creative process of a brooch.
ABOUT DANIELA MALEV
Brooch expert Daniela Malev, author of the definitive guide to brooch pin design, “To The Point – Pin Mechanisms and Brooch Back Design,” has decades of experience as both a jeweller and teacher. Trained as a goldsmith in her hometown Dresden, Germany, she also holds a Master Craftman ́s Certificate for Gold- and Silversmithing and studied Jewellery Design at Staatliche Zeichenakademie Hanau. She concluded her formal studies with a BA and MFA degree in Gemstone and Jewellery Design at the University of Applied Sciences Trier/Idar-Oberstein, Germany, and has since been teaching at renowned institutions internationally.
Entry Level: Suitable for jewellery students with competent Bench skills, jewellery graduates and professionals.
Languages: Taught in English. Supplemented with German & Spanish when required.
Participants: Maximum 8 People.
Materials and tools: Brass & Copper sheet along with steel wire for the pins will be provided. Students to bring their own hand tools.
Please bring different materials and fragments or tryouts, which you would like to turn into a brooch and which could become a prototype for pieces you will do after the workshop. It would not be beneficial to bring any finished pieces which are “just missing the pin”.

Introduction to the subject of brooch backs, explanation of examples and models. First exercises on pin mechanisms.
4pm: Welcome drinks.
Day 2: 10 am to 4:00pm

Further exercises, group talk about the experience and outcomes
Day 3: 10 am to 4:00pm
1 hour for lunch – provided.
Further making of models and examples.Students to bring in their own materials or potential pieces to discuss and explore how the pin mechanism could be integrated.
Day 4: 10 am to 4:00pm
1 hour for lunch – provided.
Personal decision: to either work on your own projects which integrate the pin or to keep on making models which explore different mechanisms
4:30pm onwards – 1 hour lecture followed by dinner with drinks – provided.
Day 5: 10 am to 4:00pm
1 hour for lunch – provided.
Finish work on the pieces, 2 o´clock set up a presentation and engage in a group discussion on your outcomes
OUTCOME:
THIS MASTERCLASS WILL INITIATE AND ENCOURAGE A CONSCIOUS APPROACH TO THE DESIGN OF THE BROOCH BACK AND ITS MECHANISMS. FURTHERMORE, YOU WILL LEARN THAT THE BROOCH BACK MECHANISM SHOULD BE THOUGHT OF, AND INTEGRATED, DURING THE WHOLE CREATIVE PROCESS OF A BROOCH.
